What it is

Kentucky Mudworks is a ceramic supply retailer and clay maker with shops in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky, and a first-party online store. Its About Us page says it began in 2001 as a beginner pottery studio and basic ceramic supply shop, and has grown to offer classes, workshops, and supplies. The frontpage describes it as a “ceramic supplier, distributor, gallery space, and community classroom.” It sells its own moist clay bodies (low-fire, mid-fire, and high-fire), house decorating slips, and dry glazes, and it also stocks Standard and Laguna clays, commercial glazes, raw materials, tools, and equipment. The Lexington shop is home to Dirty Girls Pottery Tools. It is not a membership guild. Classes exist on site, but the official shop and house clay line are the Clay Plaza identity for this listing.

Who it’s for

Studio potters, schools, and hobbyists in Kentucky and the surrounding region who want Kentucky Mudworks house clay for store pickup in Lexington or Louisville. Also potters elsewhere in the US who order clay, glaze, and equipment from the official kymudworks.com shop (including the 25# Clay Delivered flat-rate boxes). Use the official shop URLs on kymudworks.com, not Amazon or affiliate listings.

Why it’s listed

This is a first-party clay manufacturer and supplier with a live official Shopify store, printed Lexington and Louisville addresses and hours, and per-pound house-clay prices plus published 25 lb delivered box prices. It is not a scraped directory card.

Notes

• Category is Supplier: a first-party clay maker and two-city supply retailer with a live Shopify shop selling its own clay bodies, decorating slips, and dry glazes plus resold brands. Classes and workshops are secondary to the supply identity for this directory.
• First Kentucky listing on Clay Plaza. Distinct from already-listed suppliers (Laguna, Standard, Aardvark, Mid-South Ceramic Supply, Trinity, Clay King, etc.). Clay King and others may resell Kentucky Mudworks clay; this listing is the manufacturer’s own shop. Keep separate from the Lapidary / Mahjong / Bee / Bonsai directories.
• Site inconsistencies at check: (1) About Us still frames the origin as both studio and supply shop; this Clay Plaza card treats the first-party shop / house clay as the primary identity. (2) Sheltowee carried a pre-order / production-begins-9/30 note at check — confirm stock before ordering. (3) White Lightning’s Bulk Clay variant showed unavailable while other porcelains remained listed. (4) Per-lb collection prices and 25# delivered box prices are different products; do not mix them at checkout.
• Per-lb prices ($0.90–$1.85), 25# delivered dollars, slip $15/$68 and $17/$79, and Lexington/Louisville hours were transcribed from official pages checked on 2026-09-29 and may change.
• Official shop URL of record: https://kymudworks.com/. First-party only; reject Amazon/affiliate mirrors.
• Not affiliated with Clay Plaza.
• No Clay Plaza contact, purchase, booking, or publication action was taken.
• First-party wordmark saved beside this listing as kentucky-mudworks.png (from the kymudworks.com Shopify CDN Wordmark_web-white.png with the site’s white pad, 800 × 106).

FAQ

Q: Can I buy direct from Kentucky Mudworks online?
A: Yes. The official store at https://kymudworks.com/ sells house moist clay, decorating slips, dry glazes, Standard and Laguna clays, tools, and equipment. Use the Mid-Fire / Ky Mudworks Clay collections for per-lb pricing, or the 25# Clay Delivered product for single-box shipped bags (e.g. Sheltowee $43.50 at check). Showrooms: 800 Floyd Drive Suite 110, Lexington, KY 40505 (Mon–Fri 9–5, Sat 10–2; 859-389-9681) and 914 N English Station Road Suite A2, Louisville, KY 40223 (Mon–Fri 9–4, Sat 10–2; 502-915-7790).

Q: What clay prices were live at check?
A: Mid-Fire collection and product JSON (checked 2026-09-29) priced house clay per pound, for example Sheltowee, Iceman, Elkhorn Red, Speckled Turtle, and Roo at $0.90/lb; Brown Bear $0.96/lb; Speckled Brown Bear $0.98/lb; Kota Porcelain $1.80/lb; Polar Bear $1.60/lb; White Lightning $1.85/lb. The 25# delivered box listed Sheltowee at $43.50 and Kota at $66.00. Confirm on the live pages before ordering.

Q: Is Kentucky Mudworks a guild or only a teaching studio?
A: Neither as its Clay Plaza category. Kentucky Mudworks is a Kentucky clay maker and supply retailer with two showrooms and a first-party web shop. It also offers classes and workshops, but this listing is filed under Supplier because of the house clay line and official shop. For association membership use a guild, and for a membership-first class studio use a Studio listing.
