Who it’s for
Potters and clay artists of every skill level in Georgia, especially north Georgia and the Canton area, plus studio owners who want to bring their students in, and high school and college students (ages 16–24).
Why it’s listed
It is a membership organization of clay artists with its own website, an elected board, published dues and a 2026 meeting and workshop calendar. It does not run a public studio or sell supplies.
- About (About Us page, checked 2026-10-20): “Founded in 2003, the Georgia Clay Council (GCC) is a volunteer-run organization led by an elected board.” Its mission is “to create learning and enrichment opportunities that inspire and connect clay artists of every skill level.” The home page says it has advanced “the appreciation of ceramic art in Georgia since 2003.”
- Membership (Contact Us page): 2026 dues are $40 Individual; Studio $40 for the first member plus $15 per additional artist working in the same studio (this can be a teaching studio with its students); $15 Student (ages 16–24, high school or college). Dues cover the calendar year and renew each January. Dues are paid through the council’s Square links or by check.
- Meetings (Member Meetings page): held bi-monthly, “often on the second Thursday,” together with Bowl-a-thons that make bowls for Canton Empty Bowls. Meetings alternate between afternoon and evening, and a Google Meet link lets members attend virtually. The 2026 page lists February 12, a June member workshop weekend, August 13 and October 8 (Thursday, Bowl-a-thon 10 am–12 pm, then meeting and potluck lunch at Paws & Pots Studio, Canton), and a December member meeting with a raku firing at Something Southern Pottery, 145 Arliss Drive, Canton (date not yet set).
- Workshops (Workshops page): the June 6–7, 2026 member workshop covered a pit firing, mold making with Triny Cline, gelli plates, 3D printing for clay with Kathryn Somers, cutting-machine stencils, silk screens and press molds.
- Canton Empty Bowls (Canton Empty Bowls page): the third annual event is March 20, 2027, 11 am–2:30 pm at Canton City Hall, 110 Academy Street. A fall special ticket is $30 (regular $35) through November 1; each ticket includes a handmade bowl and a soup meal, and proceeds go to three local food-security charities.
- Scholarship (Annual Scholarship page): current members can apply for up to $1,000 a year toward a class or workshop, voted on by the membership; the recipient then teaches what they learned to other members.
