What it is
Northern Clay Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit ceramic-arts studio and school in Minneapolis, MN. Its About page says it opened in 1990 and “advances the ceramic arts for artists, learners, and the community, through education, exhibitions, and artist services.” The homepage mission block repeats that it is a 501(c)(3) and lists goals around classes, exhibitions, artist support, and an inclusive clay community. The shop footer prints EIN 41-1616650. It is not a guild and not a clay supplier.
Who it’s for
Beginners through intermediate-to-advanced makers who want in-person wheel, handbuilding, special-topics, or workshop classes in Minneapolis; visitors who want free galleries and a sales shop of artist-made work; and ceramic artists applying for studio space, residencies, or grants. Registration Policies: adult classes and workshops are for ages 18 and up. Education page: Project Workshops (including Clay for Couples and Try the Wheel) are the shorter introduction; scholarships are lottery-based for adult students only. Open studio is for currently enrolled adults (Student Info / Registration Policies). Youth and family programming, ClayToGo, and ART@HAND outreach are listed on the homepage and Education page for schools, libraries, senior centers, and partners.

Notes
- Category is Studio. Classes, exhibitions, residencies, and a sales gallery of artist-made work sit inside one school/studio — not a membership guild and not a clay manufacturer.
- Printed Fall 2026 tuition on first-party product cards checked today includes $210 + $60 lab fee ($270) for 5-week Beginner Wheel Throwing 26FBW8 and 26FBW4, and $460 + $120 lab fee ($580) for 12-week Spanish Immersion 26FAW4. Registration Policies also print the $25 drop/transfer processing fee and clay allowance “up to $25.” WMAA page prints up to $2,000 for 2026. APF demonstration-pass cards on the shop catalog printed from $22.50 (Saturday) and $30.00 (Sunday). Confirm the live product card before treating any rate as fixed; several Fall sections were marked sold out on the check date.
- Shop homepage (checked 2026-09-02): “Last year, Northern Clay Center fired 20,000 pots, ran 140 community outreach programs, represented 329 artists, awarded 9 residencies and fellowships, offered 163 classes and workshops, hosted 9 exhibitions, and paid over $555,000 to artists.” Homepage exhibitions copy: two gallery spaces, “around 10 annual exhibitions.” Use those as page-specific claims; do not invent membership counts.
- Special closures printed in the site footer: Independence Day July 4; APF preparation August 25–27; Labor Day September 7; Winter Open House preparation November 13–14; Thanksgiving Day November 26; Christmas Eve December 24 open 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; Christmas Day December 25; New Year’s Eve December 31 open 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; New Year’s Day January 1, 2027.
- May Featured Artists page prints a 2026 NCECA Gallery Expo presence in Detroit for APF artist work. That is a conference booth printed on the page, not a claim that NCC is an NCECA member organization. Do not invent a current NCECA affiliation.
- Not affiliated with Clay Plaza.
